Life really does start at fifty, a new study has revealed.

Rather than slowing down, modern senior citizens are gearing up to enjoy their later years, travelling more, taking up fresh hobbies or learning new skills

Over a third of the 2,000 over 50s surveyed said they felt just as energetic now, if not more so, than they did in their 20s.

And 55 per cent feel that they have more ‘lust for life’ now than when they were younger.

Nadia Sawalha, TV presenter, Master Chef winner and author of five best-selling cookery books, says: “I love being in my 50s and I’m packing in so much more than I ever did when I was younger, both personally and professionally.

It’s a really exciting time but it does come with its challenges. I need my physical health and energy levels to keep up with what I want to do, as I can often feel tired and not as full of energy as I used to.”

The survey also identified travel as the biggest draw in later life. Thirty six per cent of over 50s want to get out and see more of the world, while one in ten think that they still have the energy in them to take up a new sport.

Twelve per cent want to learn a new language while a fifth are looking to occupy their time with a new hobby.

However, these new activities can prove problematic for Brits who are starting to feel worn out as they get older. Seventy six per cent of those surveyed feel that they lack the energy to do everything they want to do in life.

Poor diet may be the cause, with 77 per cent unaware that the level of protein they require may increase as they get old.

Fifty nine per cent meanwhile are unsure if they are getting enough vitamins and minerals to support their busy lives.

Nutritionist Juliette Kellow explains, “As we get older, our body uses proteins, vitamins and minerals differently, so ensuring we have enough of these nutrients in our diet to support good health is important in order to maintain a busy lifestyle.

“Unlike younger generations who are very protein savvy, people in their fifties are less likely to consider protein a priority.

“One easy way to boost our intake is to ensure our snacks – as well as our meals – contain plenty of protein, as well as a wide range of vitamins and minerals.”

Nadia Sawalha, TV presenter, Master Chef winner and author of five best-selling cookery books, who has created a series of recipes using Meritene, continued: “I didn’t realise that my tiredness could’ve been helped by having certain nutrients, like Vitamin B2, B6, C & Iron, in my diet.

“That’s why I’ve now created a series of recipes using the Meritene range to give my generation a tasty and super easy way to get the protein, vitamins and minerals we all need to get the best out of life.”

Great as a nutritious snack, the Meritene, Everyday Nutrition range contains a unique blend of high quality protein, 10 vitamins and 6 minerals with a great taste specifically designed for adult daily nutrition.
